Cookie policy
We set only the few cookies the basket and the chat need to work, plus one saved-details cookie that you switch on yourself, so there is no analytics, no advertising and no cookie banner to click through.
1. What we use
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. Some are needed for something you have asked the website to do, such as holding a basket. Others are optional, such as those that measure visits or show adverts.
We use the three cookies in section 2 and no others. Under the UK’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, cookies that are strictly necessary for something you have asked for do not need your consent; any others do. We set one cookie of that second kind, the saved-details cookie, and only after you tick a box to ask for it.
2. The cookies we set
Scroll the table sideways to see every column.
| Name | What it does | Lasts | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
PHPSESSID |
Keeps your basket on our server while you shop. It is set when you add a course to the basket or open the checkout, and not when you only browse. | Until you close your browser | Strictly necessary |
buyer |
Saves what you typed in the checkout form (name, email address, company, country and address) so the form is filled in next time. It is set only if you tick “remember my details”, a box that is unticked by default. It is stored in your browser, not on our server. | 180 days | Functional, set only with your consent |
supchat_v |
A random code that links your browser to the chat conversation you started, so that our replies reach you and your messages stay on screen as you move around the site and when you come back. It is set when you send your first chat message, not when you open the chat. | 1 year | Strictly necessary for the chat you start |
All three are set by this website itself. They cannot be read by scripts running on the page (HttpOnly), they are not sent with most requests that other websites start (SameSite), and they are marked Secure whenever you are on a secure connection.
You can erase the saved-details cookie whenever you like on the forget my saved details page. Checking out again with the box unticked also deletes it. What we do with the data in these cookies is in our privacy notice.
3. Why there is no cookie banner
We do not set analytics cookies, advertising cookies or cookies for social media, and we do not load tracking pixels or remarketing scripts. The two strictly necessary cookies do not need consent, and the saved-details cookie is set only after you tick the box, which is your consent. That leaves nothing for a banner to ask you, so we do not show one.
4. Requests to other servers
Apart from cookies, your browser contacts other servers to fetch things that appear on our pages. Each request goes straight from your browser to a third party, which can see your IP address and ordinary browser details, as with any website you visit. We set no cookies for any of them.
- Fonts. The lettering on every page loads from a third-party font service.
- Stock photographs. The photographs on the site, and the portrait in the chat panel, load from a third-party content delivery network.
- Payment icons. The row of payment-method icons in the footer and at checkout loads from a third-party content delivery network.
- The payment page. When you press the button to pay, you leave our website for a payment page hosted by our payment service provider. It sets its own cookies, which we do not control. Its own notices explain them.
Our privacy notice lists who receives data and why.
5. Controlling cookies in your browser
Every browser lets you see, block and delete cookies, usually under Settings, in the Privacy or Security section. You can also browse in a private window, which deletes its cookies when you close it. The Information Commissioner’s Office gives plain guidance on cookies at ico.org.uk.
If you block or delete cookies, the site still works, with these effects:
- Without the
PHPSESSIDcookie you cannot keep a basket, so you cannot check out. - Without the
supchat_vcookie the chat will not show your earlier messages. We keep a conversation for the period in our privacy notice, and you can ask us to delete it. - Without the
buyercookie you simply type your details at checkout each time.
6. Questions and changes
If we ever add a cookie, we will update this page first, and we will ask for your consent before setting any cookie that needs it. Questions about cookies can go to hello@dalbyonline.co.uk.
